UP Studio owner Alicia Head discovered the Pilates method while rehabilitating a dance injury. She began her education at St. Francis Memorial Hospital's Dance Medicine division, a pioneer in the Dance Medicine field. In 2005, Ms. Head started mentoring new graduates of the LBDC Teacher Training program by starting a Reformer Class for Instructors and was invited to be a master trainer for the LBDC course by Marie-Jose in 2009. With a background in ice skating, gymnastics and dance, and the need to find an inspiring approach to stay in shape and avoid injury, Ilyse was drawn to Pilates having learned it was the conditioning choice for such creative movers. Ilyse Brawer began her relationship with Long Beach Dance Conditioning (now UP Studio) as a client in 1995. It wasn’t long before her enthusiasm for her own practice at LBDC led her to complete the Advances in Pilates Technique Certification course by Marie-José at the LBDC Academy of Movement in 1996. After completing her training there, Ilyse was invited to be part of the studio staff to oversee open studio sessions, conduct Mat and Equipment classes, and work with private clients. In 2001, after mentoring with and assisting Marie-Jose with many of her courses, Ilyse earned her way onto the teacher training staff of the LBDC certification course. Ilyse continues to take advanced workshops with world renowned master teachers and attend conferences to keep her skills sharp and relevant. She is also certified through the advanced level of the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® since 1997 as well as certified in GYROKINESIS®.
Her teaching style has developed many a student and client into masterful practitioners by her emphasizing excellence in form and technique. With her many years of dedication to her craft and through her very meticulous cueing, she empowers her clients to understand and embody optimal body mechanics and postural improvements, ease in movement and increase in strength, flexibility and coordination, and to achieve the many physical transformations that Pilates and the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® can imbue.
